The reconciliation

In Verdun Peace comes firts

In 1984, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, an historic meeting took place on the site of the fighting. The President of France and the Chancellor of Germany shook hands to mark the reconciliation of their two nations.

This desire for peace was reaffirmed once more, in 1987, when the UN christened the city of Verdun "World Capital of Peace, Freedom and Human Rights".

Four years later, Verdun's soldiers departed for former Yugoslavia under UN command, with the mission of restoring and maintaining peace.

The 2nd Regiment of Chasseurs took part in the enforcement of the first mandate, going into action in the Belgrade-Sarajevo region.

This mission was the first of numerous missions, all with the same goal : peace for the region, and hope for peace in the world.
