The Argonne was freed thanks to the Meuse-Argonne offensive carried out by the Americans and the French from 26th September 1918 to 11th November 1918.

These battles explain the presence of the various American sites of Remenbrance, managed by the American War Memorial Commission.

The American cemetery in Romagne-sous-Montfaucon covers an area of 52 ha. Besides its Memorial and the chapel, the remains of 14,246 soldiers are buried here, for the most part killed in action during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Due to its size and the number of graves, it is the largest American military cemetery in Europe.

The American Memorial in Montfaucon rises more than 60m above the ruins of the old village. The massive Doric column of more than 50m in height is surmounted by a symbolic statue representing Freedom; It faces the 1st American Army frontline on the start of the 26th September 1918 offensive. From the top of the tower, a vast area of the Meuse-Argonne battlefields can be seen.
